BETWEEN WORLDS Oil Stick on Canvas | 42" × 48" | 2024
He is crouching at the threshold. Behind him, everything that made us human. Ahead, something we have not yet named.
Between Worlds is a painting about the most significant moment in human history since we first stood upright — the precipice between the world shaped by nature and the world being rebuilt by code. A male figure crouches at the centre of the canvas, his body rendered in the full chromatic intensity that oil stick delivers at its most expressive — acid yellow, deep crimson, cobalt blue, the colours of a body that is simultaneously ancient and electric, painted with the physical confidence of someone who understands that the human form has always been the most precise instrument we have for measuring what it means to be alive.
Beneath his feet the ground is moss and microchip simultaneously — the organic and the digital occupying the same surface, the patterns of nature and the patterns of circuit boards revealed as the same pattern seen from different distances. Behind him the background pulses — what begins as leaves and fruit and the dotted abundance of the natural world becomes, as you look longer, something else. Pixels. Signal. The hypnotic repeating geometry of 5G wave frequencies rendered in the colours of a garden that is slowly, irreversibly being translated into data.
He knows. That is what his posture says. The crouch is not defeat — it is the posture of someone gathering themselves before something enormous. The thinker, updated. The human animal at the exact moment before the leap.
Between Worlds is painted entirely in oil stick — the medium giving every mark a warmth and physical presence that feels almost defiant in a painting about the digital. The irony is entirely intentional. The most analogue of mark-making tools. The most urgent of subjects.
This is one of the most conceptually significant works in the collection. A painting made for this moment because this moment needed one.
