Two Baltic military men, seated together, hands quietly clasped between them.

The gesture is small and it is everything. Whether it reads as brotherhood, as something closer, or as some tenderness that doesn't need a name — the painting doesn't say, and it isn't trying to. What's certain is the ease of it. These are men who have survived something together, who wear their ceremonial dress — deep plum jackets threaded with gold braid, teal and burgundy jodhpurs, white gloves — with the composure of soldiers, but who sit with a closeness that softens all that formality into something more private. A laurel wreath crowns the words "BRAVE MEN" above their heads, less a caption than a quiet certainty.

They are beautiful men, painted as such — the strong lines of the face, the dark hair, the direct and unguarded gaze given the same care as the hands. Behind them the canvas is in motion: burnt orange and hot pink bleed into each other, drips running the full height of the painting, collaged fragments of old text and forgotten prints surfacing and vanishing beneath layers of shellac, as though the two men have been pulled forward out of history itself and asked to sit still for a moment before returning to it. Cobalt pools at their feet, unresolved, the way the story around them is left unresolved.

What holds the eye is the contrast — the stillness and tenderness of the two figures against the restlessness of everything around them. Whatever they are to each other, they have chosen to be it in the open, hands joined, entirely unbothered by the question.
