From a photograph taken while actually drifting above the extraordinary landscape of Cappadocia, Turkey — the basket netting visible in the lower foreground, the evidence of the artist's own presence in the sky above one of the most otherworldly places on earth.

Look at the lower canvas. That lattice of white lines is the balloon basket. You are not looking at Cappadocia. You are floating above it.

The landscape unfolds beneath in teal, sage, pink and ochre — the ancient volcanic geology of the region rendered from a perspective that most people will only ever see once in their lives if they are very lucky and very brave. Dozens of hot air balloons pepper the sky and the valley below, colourful and impossibly small against the scale of everything. And above it all — that horizon. A band of pure yellow dissolving into orange, into red, into the particular fire of a Cappadocian sunrise that has been burning over this landscape for millennia and will burn long after everyone in every balloon has gone home.
