Desert Prophecy is a vision — literally, compositionally, in every sense. A robed figure moves through a landscape of extraordinary abundance — pink blooms the size of dinner plates, yellow wildflowers scattered like confetti, saguaro cactus standing their centuries-long watch against a sky of the most luminous turquoise. Behind her a volcano erupts in rays of red and orange, the kind of eruption that is simultaneously catastrophic and completely, impossibly beautiful. To the right a jellyfish drifts through the sky as if it has always been there and the sky is simply a different kind of ocean.

Nothing here is impossible. Everything here is exactly right.

The figure is painted in blue and violet — the colours of vision and of dusk and of the particular quality of light in a desert just before something changes permanently. Her eyes are closed. She doesn't need them open. She already knows where she's going and what she'll find when she gets there.

The pastel marks bring atmosphere and light to the acrylic ground — the sky alive with it, the flowers luminous, the mountains receding into a haze that is part heat and part prophecy. On the deep birch wood panel the colours have the saturated, glowing quality of something illuminated from within.

Desert Prophecy is a painting about the moment before the revelation. Which is always, it turns out, a garden in full bloom.
