DAHLIA DARLING Acrylic & Pastel on Canvas | 48" × 48" | 2021

She is looking directly at you. She has decided you can handle it.

Dahlia Darling is a portrait of complete, unapologetic presence — a figure in a deep burgundy corset, black choker, blue eyes that have seen considerably more than they are currently letting on, set against a ground of near-black and deep purple alive with dark dahlias and hot pink splashes that feel simultaneously decorative and slightly dangerous. Her rouge is high. Her red lips are set. Her expression is the expression of someone who has been underestimated before and found it useful.

The dahlias surround her like a court — dark, voluptuous, the flowers of gothic romance and fin-de-siècle excess — painted in deep burgundy and purple against the black ground with the loose, layered quality of acrylic and pastel working together. They are her world and she is their queen and neither of them is particularly interested in your opinion about it.

The pastel marks bring a softness to the surface that the subject refuses to have — a deliberate tension between the medium and the sitter that makes the painting more interesting the longer you look at it. The tattoo. The choker. The number 3 reversed in the upper right like a private notation, a secret kept in plain sight.

Dahlia Darling is a painting about a woman who knows exactly who she is. Which is the most powerful subject any portrait can have.

FAQ

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We offer free shipping on most works, with shipping costs (when applicable) never exceeding 10% of the piece's price. Large canvases ship rolled in a professional tube; oversized works requiring special packaging may be an exception, and we're happy to provide a quote. International collectors are responsible for any duties and taxes upon arrival.

Can I receive my painting already stretched and framed?

Large works ship rolled by default for safety in transit. If you'd prefer your piece delivered already on stretcher bars, contact us before purchasing for a separate shipping quote at your own expense. If you're interested in framing, reach out to claire@clairepriceartist.com to discuss your vision — we're happy to provide quotes and mockups to help you visualize the finished piece.

What if I'm not happy with my purchase?

Returns are accepted within 30 days of receiving the work. Choosing an artwork is a deeply personal experience, and we'll do our best to help place the right piece in your home — if something isn't right, contact us immediately and we'll try to facilitate an exchange or, if necessary, a refund. For returns, the client is responsible for the cost of shipping and insuring the piece back to us; once it arrives safely, a full refund is issued minus shipping and related expenses.

Is each piece truly one of a kind?

Yes — every original is a unique, one-of-one work, signed by the artist on the front and/or back, and shipped with a certificate of authenticity establishing provenance. The artist retains all copyright to the image, and reserves the right to reproduce it as prints or use it in future projects, at her discretion.

Do you take custom commissions?

Occasionally, by inquiry. Commission pricing is calculated at $4.50 per square inch, with a 50% non-refundable deposit required to begin. Contact us to discuss your piece and confirm availability.
