Cabin Fever is a painting about the particular beauty of a garden that has been left, briefly, to its own devices — and discovered, in that brief unsupervised freedom, exactly what it wanted to be. White daisy heads float through the composition like small explosions of pure light, some sharp and present, others drifting at the edges of focus the way flowers do when the wind is involved and you are standing very still watching them. Behind them the cabin — warm brick, dark timber, windows catching the afternoon — sits with the satisfied solidity of a building that has been in this garden long enough to belong to it rather than the other way around.

The pointillist quality of the path in the lower canvas — cobalt and violet broken into individual marks of light — is a direct conversation with the Impressionist tradition, the garden as seen by someone who understood that what the eye actually receives is not objects but light, and that paint is the only medium honest enough to admit it. Monet would have recognised this garden. He would have wanted to paint it himself.

The palette moves from the deep, saturated greens of the foliage through yellow and acid lime to the cool blue-violet of the path and the warm terracotta of the brick — a full spectrum held together by the white of the daisy heads that float through it all like punctuation, like light itself made briefly, perfectly solid.
