L'Air — the air, the atmosphere, the feeling of a place just before you can name it — packs the visual density of a painting four times its size into an 11×14 wood panel that absolutely refuses to behave like a small work. A fan palm and bird of paradise surge upward through a ground of aqua, cobalt and lime, collaged fragments and painted letters scattered across the surface like the aftermath of a very good idea. L. AIR. C. E. — pieces of a word, a name, a language that is almost but not quite legible.
The colours are completely fearless. Turquoise and teal give way to bursts of orange, magenta and acid green — the palette of someone deeply, happily obsessed with the tropics and entirely uninterested in restraint. Every inch of this panel is doing something. Nothing is wasted. Nothing is accidental.
This is a painting for the collector who understands that scale and presence are not the same thing.
