MIDNIGHT GARDEN EXPLOSION Acrylic on Canvas | 76" × 56" | 2024
This is not a painting of a garden. This is a painting of what a garden actually is — which is a cosmos.
Midnight Garden Explosion is a monumental work and one of the most significant in this body of work to date. At 76×56 it demands to be stood in front of rather than looked at — the scale creating an immersive experience in which the viewer does not observe the garden so much as enter it, surrounded on all sides by allium heads the size of planets, eryngium thistle in electric blue, burgundy globes on tall stems, the acid yellow of a background that is simultaneously sunlight and energy and the particular frequency at which the natural world vibrates when it is at full capacity.
Nature as a cosmos. That is the idea and it is everywhere in this painting — the allium heads are galaxies, the thistle heads are nebulae, the whole composition a universe of biological complexity rendered at a scale that makes the cosmic and the botanical indistinguishable from each other. Because they are not distinguishable. The same mathematics that governs the spiral of a galaxy governs the spiral of a seed head. The garden has always known this. The painting simply makes it visible.
The surface is extraordinary — every flower head built up with sustained, devoted attention, the blue of the eryngium achieved through layered marks that give it a depth and iridescence that shifts as you move. The yellow ground blazes. The burgundy globes anchor. The whole composition holds together with the impossible logic of something that should be too much and is, instead, exactly enough.
This is painting as an act of reverence for the natural world — the garden not as decoration but as testament. As proof that the universe is not somewhere out there but right here, in every seed head, in every spiral, in every garden that has ever been left alone long enough to become itself.
Midnight Garden Explosion is a once painting. There will not be another one like it.
One original. No reproductions. The garden has always been a cosmos. This painting proves it.
