Safiya — a name meaning pure, wise, untroubled — holds her child with the quiet certainty of someone who has carried more than most and apologised for none of it. Against a ground of raw, burning orange, her wrapping cloth blazes in yellow and cobalt blue, her skirt the green of something living and undefeated. The horizon behind her is simple and absolute.
This is figurative painting at its most direct and its most powerful. No artifice. No distance. Just a mother, a child and the kind of gaze that follows you out of the room and stays with you considerably longer than that.
Painted on wood panel with the rich, luminous quality that only a solid ground can give acrylic — the colours here are deeper, more saturated, more present than canvas allows. Safiya is a small painting that occupies enormous space.
