The bird is painted in deep crimson and red — vivid, urgent, the impasto marks building the plumage with real physical presence — set against a ground of near-black alive with turquoise blue paint splashes and the stencilled ghost of letters — ABC, L — that drift through the dark behind it like the beginning of something or the remnant of something else.
