Falcon Head is inspired by the ancient Egyptian tomb mosaics that depicted Horus — the falcon god, the sky deity, the eye that sees everything — rendered here in the bold, graphic language of someone who has looked at those ancient images and understood that their power was never about refinement. It was always about presence. The flat planes of gold and black. The eye that holds you. The authority of something that was made to last.

The falcon fills the panel with complete compositional confidence — gold and black stripes cascading from head to lower canvas like the nemes headdress of a pharaoh, the white head and red-ringed eye painted with the graphic intensity of a symbol rather than a portrait. A band of deep teal anchors the lower canvas — the colour of faience, of the glazed ceramic tiles that lined the tombs, of the Nile at a certain hour. Behind it all the most electric ultramarine blue — not the blue of the ancient world but the blue of paint doing what paint does when it is completely unafraid.

The impasto surface gives the work a physical presence that the flat tomb mosaics it references never had — the gold built up, tactile, the marks of the brush still visible in the black stripes. Ancient image. Completely contemporary surface.
