CLOAKED SHIPS Acrylic on Wood Panel | 16" × 20" | 2022 Magical Thinking Series
Not everything in the sky is what it appears to be.
Cloaked Ships belongs to the Magical Thinking Series — a body of work exploring esoteric themes, new age thinking, disclosure, paranormal phenomena and the extraordinary atmospheric events that surround us constantly, captured now more than ever on the iPhones of ordinary people standing in ordinary places looking up and seeing something that doesn't quite fit the explanation they've been given.
This one came from exactly that kind of image — a snow forest at dusk or dawn, the trees heavy and orange-lit, the deep teal sky doing something that meteorology can explain and something else simultaneously that it cannot. A rainbow arc moves across the upper canvas with the particular quality of something that is not quite a rainbow — too deliberate, too perfectly curved, the colours too saturated, the placement too specific. Iridescent cloud. Atmospheric optics. Or something using the sky the way the sky has always been used by things that understand it better than we do.
The artist has had a lifetime of firsthand experiences that defy material science — extra sensory perception, encounters with phenomena that exist at the edge of what conventional frameworks can accommodate. The Magical Thinking Series does not argue for any particular explanation. It simply paints what has been seen and witnessed and photographed and felt, and allows the viewer to bring their own relationship with the knowable and the unknowable to the work.
The snow forest glows orange and pink in light that has no obvious source. The sky is the deep teal of something that knows more than it's telling. The arc moves across it with complete confidence.
Something is up there. Whether it is cloaked is, of course, a matter of perspective.
An ongoing body of work exploring esoteric themes, new age philosophy, disclosure, paranormal phenomena and atmospheric events that exist at the boundary of the explainable. Each work begins with a real image — a photograph, a sighting, a firsthand experience — and becomes something that holds the question open rather than closing it.
