Galileo's Garden is a painting of a wildflower meadow at the absolute peak of its summer abundance — sunflowers, rudbeckia, red poppies, pink zinnias, blue salvia, the tiny yellow confetti of a thousand smaller flowers scattered through a ground of the most saturated, living green imaginable. The composition looks downward into the garden rather than across it — the viewpoint of someone who has stopped walking and simply stood still and let the abundance come up to meet them.

The title speaks to the painting's deeper subject — Galileo who looked through his telescope and understood that the universe was larger and more ordered and more beautiful than anyone had dared imagine, and who found in that understanding not diminishment but wonder. The garden is the same discovery made at a different scale. The same mathematics. The same impossible, generative order underlying the apparent chaos of a summer border in full flower.

Every bloom is painted with the sustained attention it deserves — the rudbeckia heads built up in layers of yellow and brown, the poppies catching the light at their translucent edges, the green between them alive with the particular quality of summer grass and leaf in afternoon light.
