A figure arches and reaches against a ground of pool-blue tile — the grid behind her as precise and ordered as she is fluid and instinctive. Her form is rendered in charcoal and acrylic, the marks building a body that is simultaneously sculptural and completely in motion — arms reaching, torso twisting, the whole composition caught in that suspended moment between effort and grace where athletic movement becomes something closer to art.

Red dots scatter across the tile like droplets of water caught mid-flight or the aftermath of something moving very fast through very still air. The teal of a pool surface glows at the lower edge. The blue above is the particular blue of an indoor aquatic centre — institutional, cool, the blue of chlorine and concentration and bodies doing extraordinary things.

The wood panel ground gives the charcoal marks a quality they couldn't find on canvas — a slight resistance, a texture that makes each line feel considered even when it was made quickly. Which is the nature of drawing a body in motion. You have to be fast and certain simultaneously.
