This painting took two months to complete. Some paintings simply need that long.

Zoe's mother came to sit after meeting the artist at a soup kitchen — a small act of trust that became something much larger and much more lasting. She brought her baby. The artist brought everything she had.

What followed was two months of looking, of layering, of refusing to let this child be anything less than fully seen. Every fold of skin, every bright and curious eye, every tiny finger — rendered with a devotion that is visible in every square inch of the surface. Zoe sits held in her mother's arm against a bold zebra-stripe cloth, looking out at the world with the frank, unguarded openness of someone who has not yet learned to be anything other than completely present.

She is magnificent.
