Blue Cardinal is the companion piece to Orange Cardinal — the same Northern Cardinal, the same dark ground, an entirely different energy. Where Orange Cardinal burns, Blue Cardinal pulses. The bird is painted in deep crimson and red — vivid, urgent, the impasto marks building the plumage with real physical presence — set against a ground of near-black alive with turquoise blue paint splashes and the stencilled ghost of letters — ABC, L — that drift through the dark behind it like the beginning of something or the remnant of something else.

The chalk pastel marks bring a softness to the surface that the acrylic beneath refuses to have — a deliberate tension between media that gives the painting a quality that shifts as the light changes.
