A Borzoi — that most aristocratic and impractical of dogs, all silken fur and impossible elegance — tumbles through a ground of deep, velvety black with the abandon of something that has let go of every concern simultaneously. The limbs are loose. The fur catches a light that has no obvious source. A neon yellow sun hangs to the left, dripping, the colour of something radioactive and completely beautiful, casting its impossible glow across the dark and illuminating nothing it should and everything it does.

The painting is somewhere between a dream and a memory and a moment of pure physical abandon — the dog mid-flight, mid-fall, mid-something that has no precise name in any language. The brushwork is physical and urgent, the grey and white of the fur built up in marks that carry the energy of the hand that made them. Red marks in the upper corner, barely there, like the last traces of something that happened just before this moment.

Borzoi is a painting about grace in freefall. Which is, if you think about it, the only kind of grace worth having.
