A variegated rubber plant — Ficus elastica, the most forgiving and most beautiful of the indoor plants — fills the panel against a ground of warm pink and aqua that makes the deep green and cream of the leaves almost luminous. The variegation is painted with genuine botanical attention — each leaf distinct, the dark green and cream and the faintest blush of pink at the edges rendered with the kind of close looking that turns a houseplant into something worth stopping in front of.

The background is loosely, joyfully painted — pink brushstrokes moving against aqua blue, a flash of hot pink at the lower left, the whole ground alive with the energy of someone who loves colour and is not pretending otherwise. Against it the rubber plant glows. It always does, in the right light, in the right room, when someone has actually looked at it properly.
